Born Caversham, Oxford. Butler was christened on 24 October 1826. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1825 having won a silver medal from the Society of Arts for a plaster model after the antique the year before. Butler exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1828 and established a successful practice as a portrait sculptor although he also undertook architectural work. For example designing some lampstands for the Thames Embankment (1870) and also lions' heads for pedestals on the north and south side of the river.
Butler's daughter Clehorow Caroline (born c.1851) was described as a sculptor and his son, Timothy (born c.1855) was an illustrative draughtsman in 1881. He died at 186 Euston Road and was described in the probate calendar as a 'decayed sculptor'. Clehorow was Butler's sole executrix.
