Sculptor, painter, picture restorer
Born in Bloomsbury, London. Son of Adam Schaefer, born c.1825 in Waldeck, Germany, Tailor. Primarily a painter, however also made sculptures c.1889-c.1901. Schafer also worked as a picture restorer and wrote 'Notes on the Cleaning, Restoration and Preservation of Paintings', which was published c.1900 from 40 Brewer Street. There is a copy of this document in the National Portrait Gallery Archive, Subject Notes Conservation. This aspect of his career is dealt with more fully by Jacob Simon in the directory of 'British picture restorers, 1600-1950' available online on the website of the National Portrait Gallery (London).
