Active: 1881 - 1926
Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, stone carver, ecclesiastical sculptor, teacher
Born in Norton, Durham and christened on 13 January 1855. He was the son of William Taylerson (born c.1828 in county Durham), a railway engine driver. John Edward and his widowed mother Margaret (born c.1827) moved to London before 1881. At this time he was working as an ecclesiastical sculptor (possibly for Thomas Earp though this is unconfirmed) and his mother was a tea dealer and provision merchant. Taylerson studied at at Faversham School of Art, South London Technical School of Art (the latter c.1882) and at Westminster School of Art. By 1881 he was working as an ecclesiastical sculptor and had established a business in Wandsworth. His most important architectural projects include: Lloyds Shipping Register, Thames House, and the majority of sculpture in wood and stone at St John's Holland Road, Kensington. Taylerson's sequence of the wise and foolish virgins in the porch and of the apostles and saints on the chancel screen are very fine. He also sculpted the group, entitled 'Succouring the Defenceless' for the War Memorial at Warlingham, Surrey. Taylerson taught modelling and wood-carving at Battersea Polytechnic.
This record includes information about Taylerson's work at St John's Holland Road, Kensington submitted by Neil Traynor. See: http://www.stjohnthebaptisthollandroad.co.uk/history/ (accessed 30 April 2018).
