Born in London, Middlesex and died in Bath, Somerset. She was the third generation of a large family of sculptors. Sarah's father was Lucius Gahagan Senior (1773-1855), who was the second son of the sculptor Lawrence Gahagan (c.1735-1820). Her uncles were the sculptors Vincent (1776-1832) and Sebastian Gahagan (1779-1838). Sarah's brother, Lucius Junior was also a sculptor. She was granted letters of administration for her father's estate on 21 June 1865, ten years after his death on 14 December 1855. Lucius Senior's estate was valued at under £200.
