Born in Worcester. He was the son of Victor Gertner (born c.1856 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), wood carver. His younger brother, Frederick Martin Gertner (born c.1887 in Worcester), became a modeller at the Royal Worcester factory and was the father of Charles Martin Gertner (born 1917), who was an art metalworker.
