Born in Llantrithyd, Glamorgan. He was the son of William John (born c.1793 in Cowbridg), a shoe maker. By the age of sixteen, Thomas was a cabinet maker (presumably an apprentice). He moved to Llandaff and then to Cardiff where he worked for the Marquis of Bute as a wood carver and designer. His son was the sculptor, William Goscombe John.
