Country of birth and death: France
Wood carver, wood sculptor, sculptor
Born in Rouen, France. Died in London. He was unmarried and his sister, Louise who was the only next of kin was granted probate. It is possible this is the Monsieur Dujardin who was a foreman at Farmer and Brindley and modelled the terracotta animals and detailing for the Natural History Museum. Several circumstantial details suggest this - his residency over a lengthy period in Lambeth and Camberwell where many employees of architectural sculpture firms usually lived and the terracotta sculpture he showed at the Royal Academy in 1884. This last indicates that he had the ability to model although wood was the material with which he was primarily associated.
However, the Natural History Museum recently acquired a volume of drawings for the scheme of architectural decoration entitled 'Some details of the enrichments of the new Museum of Natural History (South Kensington) modelled by C. Dujardin for A. Waterhouse Esq. A.R.A. architect circa 1874-1879'. So far no 'C. Dujardin' has been identified but the surname is quite a common one and it has been suggested Farmer and Brindley brought the modeller from France to execute this commission. Another possible candidate is Auguste Dujardin (1847-c.1918) who worked in France as a sculptor and was involved in architectural work at Metz. But it is not known if there is any connection with the 'C. Dujardin' associated with the book of drawings or with Edouard Romain Dujardin.
