Gilles Orlandi
Born 1858 (Circa)
Died 1922
Active: 1890 - 1922
Country of birth: Italy
Country of death: Ireland
Plaster figure maker, carver
Born in Lucca, Italy. There is some uncertainty about his date of birth. In the Irish Census of 1901 his date of birth was given as about 1851 but later records, including the Irish Census of 1911, state he was born about 1858. Orlandi was appointed formatore at Dublin Museum of Science and Art (later the National Museum of Ireland), probably in the late 1890s and he remained in post until his death in 1922.
There are references to casts he made of Irish High Crosses between 1898-1908 in the National Museum of Ireland. There are also references to Orlandi travelling to cast works in reports submitted by the Department of Agriculture and Technical Education for Ireland (for example the report for 1904-5, Parliamentary Papers, House of Commons and Command, Volume 23, p. 425). John Turpin notes that Orlandi cast Oliver Sheppard's statue of the Pikeman in plaster during the summer of 1903 and then cast three quarter size statuettes of this work in 1904. ('Oliver Sheppard's 1798 Memorials', Irish Arts Review, 1990, p. 75 and fn. 21, p. 80, see http://irishartsreview.com/irisartsreviyear/pdf/1990/20492627.pdf.bannered.pdf)
