Eliza (Elizabeth) W. Roddis
Born 1839 (Circa)
Active: 1891 - 1901
Country of birth and death: Scotland
Sculptor, proprietess of stonemasonry business
Born in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was married to the stone carver and sculptor John Roddis (c.1839-1887) of Worcester and Birmingham. In 1871 the family firm was employing 8 men and (probably) 2 boys. A decade later, their son James Watson Roddis (born c.1865 in Worcester) was working as a sculptor's apprentice. John Roddis died in 1887 and Eliza (Elizabeth) took over the management of the firm. James was working for her in 1891 and possibly died or moved away before 1901. Around the turn of the century, she probably sold the business at 45 and 47 Aston Road to Philip Henry Nourse (1857-1941), certainly from that date there was a Roddis and Nourse at this address whilst Elizabeth continued to work as a sculptor from other premises until sometime after 1901.
