Stonemason
Born in Gloucester. He was the son of John Colley (c.1788-1865), stonemason. His father and two brothers had moved to Pembroke in the early 1800s to help build the Martello towers in the Dockyard and they also constructed the Dockyard Church. John Colley seems to have established a stable stonemasonry business in Pembroke operating from East End and Main Street. Thomas and his brother William (c.1828-97) also worked in the firm. The business continued into the twentieth century through their descendants. Thomas's son William Colley Junior (1846-95) and, more especially, his grandson Thomas William Colley (1868-1948) turned the firm into a large flourishing concern.
There is information about the family and the business on the Pembroke Story website submitted by the late Joyce Colley: http://www.pembrokestory.org.uk/ColleyFamily.html (accessed 8 June 2012)
