Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, stone carver
Born in Worcestershire. His birth was registered in Droitwich and he was christened in Claines, Worcester. Gilbert was the son of Richard Lockwood Boulton (c.1832-1905), a sculptor and architectural carver who established a successful business in Cheltenham. Gilbert attended Devon County School as a boarder around 1881. From about 1891 he was working as an 'artist in stone' and sculptor in Cheltenham.
Gilbert's older brothers were Lockwood Dutson Boulton (1857-1927), Thomas Dutson Boulton (1860-1932) and his younger brother was Frank Cowley Boulton (c.1877-?). They worked for their father and took over running the firm on his retirement in 1893 (it continued in business until at least 1971). Gilbert and Thomas appear to have been the more successful and active of the brothers based on the descriptions of their households in the Census Returns and the value of his effects.
