Born in Rance. He came from a family of stonecutters who established themselves around Rance in the Hainaut province of Belgium. On 1 August 1840 Adolphe arrived in England, he married in 1844 and had established a business as a marble merchant in St Pancras before 1851. His oldest son, Adolphe Joseph Henry (1844-99) joined his father in the family firm. Another son, Victor Emmanuel (1863-1934) became a sculptor and exhibited at the Royal Academy and Liverpool Autumn Exhibition. Adolphe Joseph Senior died in London and probate was granted to his oldest son, Adolphe Joseph Henry.
