Born in Talgarth, Brecknockshire (Brecon, Powys). He established a large and successful business as a marble and stone merchant. At least two of his sons also became sculptors, these were Tom (born c.1867) and Ivor John (1873-1914). The latter was particularly successful and was active in Swansea Art Society.
