Born in Newport, Monmouthshire. He was the son of Job Thomas (c.1823-c.1884) who ran a large sculpture and stone merchant business in Newport. Ivor settled in Swansea probably in the mid or late 1890s and established a successful firm. He was an active member of Swansea Art Society, exhibiting there regularly between 1899-1911. Clifford Graham Roberts served an apprenticeship with Thomas between 1903-09 and afterwards became a successful architectural and fine art sculptor. Ivor died at the age of forty in Swansea.
