(Richard) Henry Young
Born 1842
Died 1 February 1929
Active: 1861 - 1929
Country of birth and death: England
Bronze founder, engineer, foundry owner
Born in Skipton, Yorkshire. He was the son of Richard Young (born c.1813 in Dalkeith, Scotland, died 1879), a moulder in 1851 and foreman of iron moulders in 1861. The family lived in Manchester before moving to London by 1861. Henry married Fanny Brass (born c.1845 in Pimlico, London) in 1868, the daughter of Lot Brass (born c.1815 in Somerset), a neighbour and builder master who was employing 39 men in 1871. Fanny and Henry had many children, several of whom became engineers or founders, including Henry J (born c.1870); Percy L. (born c.1872); and Douglas S (born c.1887). Another son, Arthur Stanley (1876-1968) was a sculptor and medallist. Henry was granted probate on his father's effects (the moulder Richard Young) valued at under £800 in 1880.
Henry worked as an iron moulder and founder from sometime before 1861. Around 1871, he established his own company which became the leading bronze foundry used by many sculptors during the 1870s. From about 1880, the business diversified to include engineering works and bridge building. Henry Young was still involved with the company until at least 1911. It is probable that some of Young's sons worked for, or ran, the firm until a majority stake-holding in the company was bought up by Murray Buxton in 1925.
Wealth at death: £16,015 1s. 6d.
Probate date: 12 April 1929
