Born in Manchester. He was the son of Edwin Hobbs Senior (c.1841-1904), architectural sculptor and partner in the highly successful firm of ecclesiastical and architectural sculptors founded by Thomas Earp (1828-1893). His father managed the Manchester branch of the firm which was based in Lower Mosley Street. Edwin Hobbs Junior was working as a stone carver and architectural sculptor by about 1901. He seems to have become one of the partners in the family business after his father's death in 1904.
