Born in Box, Wiltshire. He was the son of James Hobbs (born c.1804 in Box, Wiltshire), stonemason and younger brother to Charles (born c.1834 in Corsham, Wiltshire) also a stonemason. Edwin is presumed to have learned his trade in his father's workshop. By 1861 he was working as journeyman stone carver on a job in Ipswich. Three years later, he went into partnership with the Lambeth based architectural sculptor, Thomas Earp (1828-93). Edwin managed the Manchester branch of the firm which was based in Lower Mosley Street. Hobbs had a son c.1883 also called Edwin, who by 1901 was working as a stone carver.
