Born in Islington, London. He seems to have been the son of William Farley (born c.1823) presumed brother to James Samuel Farley and a stonemason living close to Kensal Green Cemetery in 1851. However in the Census Returns of 1861, when Joseph was serving an apprenticeship with James Samuel he is listed as the latter's son.
