Born in Islington, London and baptised on 27 March 1811. He established a long-lasting form of stonemasons operating from premises close to Kensal Green Cemetery and now trading as Jordan Farley Ltd. His son, James Stephen Farley (1832-67) worked for the family firm but died a year after his father. James Farley Senior was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
William Farley (born c.1823 in Islington) and presumed to be a brother of James Samuel, was probably also employed in the family firm. His address was 2 Windsor Gardens, Harrow Road in 1851, less than a mile from the cemetery at Kensal Green.
