Active: 1841 - 1901
Country of birth and death: England
Wood carver, ship's carver, gilder
Born in Portsea, Hampshire. He belonged to a family of wood carvers specialising in ship carvings, James Hellyer and Sons of London and Portsmouth. Among the known members of the business were his father, James Edward Hellyer Senior (1787-1872), his brother, James (1828-81) and his son, James Edward Hellyer Junior (1846-1914).
Hellyer and Sons exhibited a group of seventeen carved figures on a pedestal at the Great exhibition of 1851. The firm is described as 'designers' in the exhibition catalogue. It is presumed that the London side of the firm was primarily being run by the younger generation around 1850 because Frederick Hellyer and his brother, James, were living in Essex and therefore near the business address for Hellyer and Son. Whereas their father, James Edward Hellyer Senior, was based in Hampshire and seems to have worked as a carver for the Admiralty from about 1855-71. It is not clear how long Frederick and James worked together in London. Certainly by 1871 James was working back in Hampshire. Frederick died in Lewisham between July and September 1906.
