Born in Islington, London. Son of William Wills (born c.1801 in Ashburton, Devon), plasterer. He and Thomas (later a partner in business with his brother William John) both worked in their father's trade about 1851. William John was a modeller to a silversmith at that date and another brother, Frederick (born c.1830 in St Pancras), was a modeller of maps.
