Born in Newington, Surrey. He was the son of the sculptor, Cornelius Maples (born c.1807 and active until about 1851). On 18 April 1866 he married Leonora Garland who was a daughter of the architectural sculptor and modeller Thomas Priest Garland. In his memoirs, the architect Thomas Graham Jackson states that 'Maples' was the head carver at Farmer and Brindley and worked on Jackson's buildings for about twenty-two years (from about 1876-1898).
