John Hinchliffe was an assistant to John Flaxman from 1805 until the latter's death in 1826. He completed several unfinished works in the studio, including the statue of John Philip Kemble. Hinchliffe's own works largely comprise funerary monuments and busts. There are works by Hinchliffe in India, and some are on public display in Mumbai.
He was the father of the engraver, John James Hinchliffe. They and their families lived next door to each other in Mornington Place for many years. John Ely retired from practice by 1861 and died six year later aged 90.
