Born in Clerkenwell, London. He was the only surviving son of Giovanni Franchi who established a successful plaster casting business and then specialised in the production of fictile ivories and electrotype reproductions. The younger Giovanni was known both as Giovanni Antonio (at his marriage to Sarah Maria Ullmer on 25th July 1855) and Giovanni Ferdinand (in the Census Returns of 1861 and in probate records). Giovanni Antonio (Ferdinand) worked in his father's business from around 1851 until his death in 1870 as a maker of fictile ivories and electrotypes. After his father's death in 1874 the business was acquired by Elkington & Co.
