History or description: The Granite Supply Association Ltd. was founded by seven granite merchants in Aberdeen. It was in business between 1897 and the mid-1990s when it was taken over by another company and has probably ceased trading. There were four managers in all that time. After a short-lived tenure of a few months, the Directors approached John Sutherland (who was a representative for J & A Davidson, coal merchants). He ran the business until after the Second World War. John Sutherland was succeeded by his son of the same name, and then by his son in turn. Alastair Sutherland was the last manager and ran the company until the take over in the 1990s. In about 1993 the Company was taken over by John Fyfe Ltd and moved to Westhill.
The Granite Supply Association was involved in importing rough Granite blocks from various countries including: Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Portugal, South Africa and Italy. Many lasting connections and friendships were made as a result of the business, especially in Norway, Sweden and South Africa.
Information supplied by Alastair Sutherland.
