History or description: Founded by George Scott (1845-1903) and Robert Rae (1845-1910) in the 1880s. Scott and Rae had both worked as stone and cement merchants prior to setting up in business together. The firm produced a large number of monuments for the Necropolis and cemeteries throughout Scotland and the US, mostly carved in grey granite from their Killemabreck quarries and pink granite from Aberdeenshire.
Scott & Rae also executed several public drinking fountains in Glasgow, and after the WW1, the firm supplied the grey Killemabeck granite for Glasgow's cenotaph in George Square (1921-4). As pavement, cement and granite merchants they provided materials for major building works throughout Glasgow during the 1920s.
The name Scott and Rae was purchased by Matthew Bruce in 1979, a former mason with the firm, who continues to trade under its name.
