History or description: A firm of monumental and architectural sculptors founded by William Mossman Senior and then owned by John and George Mossman with William Mossman Junior. The brothers trained with their father, and took over the business after his death in 1851. Between 1853-6 the brothers traded as J. G. & W. Mossman, and then in 1857 became J. & G. Mossman after William Junior left to set up on his own.
The Mossman firm produced many monuments for the Glasgow Necropolis as well as for cemeteries throughout the country. Mossman's played an important role in the development of Glasgow's architectural sculpture by training and employing a number of younger sculptors and carvers in their workshops. These included: Walter Buchan, John Crawford, Daniel McGregor Ferguson, Frank Leslie and James Pittendrigh Macgillivray.
Mossman brothers relied on the monumental sculpture side of the business during slumps in the building trade. They also acquired a granite quarry in Creetown, Kircudbrightshire. Peter Smith was appointed manager of their granite workshop in Glasgow. From 1875, Smith worked independently as a monumental sculptor and then acquired the J. and G. Mossman business after John Mossman's death in 1891.
