Membership comprised of 'workers in the Arts', its objectives were to hold exhibitions of art work and to arrange for lectures and practical demonstrations to be held. It was an exclusive society and was mostly comprised of artists from the West of Scotland.
The Society folded by the early 1900s, despite support from local architects. This was possibly due to a small and selective membership.
