History or description: The firm was probably founded in the early 1860s and was listed under Wm M'Gregor, Builder, at 4 Duncan Street, Edinburgh in the Post-Office Edinburgh & Leith Directory for 1861-2 (p. 394). By 1865-6 the business name was given as W.D. M'Gregor, Builder, operating from 5 Pitt Street (Op. cit., 1865-66, p. 321) and four years later (1869) had moved to 40 Grindlay Street and was listed as W & D M'Gregor (Op. cit., 1868-69, p. 364). From about 1875 the McGregors were also listed in the post office directories as Masons. Amongst the buildings they constructed were a tenement at Glengyle Terrace in 1869, the firm's initials appear on the facade of number 16c.
