Function: Art society and art gallery
Policy: Based on the British Institution in London, its prime aim was to present the works of old Masters, and later also of contemporary Scottish Art.
Also housed the Statue Gallery which comprised approximately two hundred and thirty nine casts of sculptures and reliefs. Artists and students were admitted without charge.

This address was shared with the Royal Scottish Academy, The Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Trustees' Academy. From 1910, following a reorganisation of arts institutions in Edinburgh the building was designated as the Royal Scottish Academy and remains so to the present day
