History or description: 'Erected by public subscription in 1883. The gallery contains the unique Macdonald Collection of artists' portraits, and a very fine collection of casts presented by numerous citizens and friends. Large extensions suggested by Sir Geo. Reid and designed by A.M. Mackenzie, A.R.S.A. and Sons were completed in April, 1905. A grant of £8,000 for this purpose was made by the Trustees of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Clark of Aberdeen. The additions comprise several spacious galleries and sculpture courts' (Year's Art, 1907, p. 274).
