History or description: 'Presented to the city through the munificence of Mr. Alexander Laing. The gallery was opened by Lord Ridley, on October 13th, 1904, with an important loan collection of pictures illustrative of British Art from Hogarth to Leighton. There are four large galleries, lighted by electricity, and the museum courts contain collections of European and Oriental porcelain, ironwork, silver plate, decorative book bindings, Indo-Persian drawings and manuscripts, and a special loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum.' Curator in 1904 was C. Bernard Stevenson (Year's Art, 1904, p. 215).
