History or description: The Northern Art Workers' Guild was founded in 1896. It was reported in 'The Studio' that 'Mr. Walter Crane recently addressed, at Manchester, a meeting convened for the purpose of forming an Association of Art-workers, to be called "The Northern Art-workers' Guild." A committee was appointed, and Messrs. H. C. D. Charlton and Edgar Wood consented to act as the honorary secretaries of the new Guild.' ('The Studio’ August 1896 p.156)
The Guild's first major exhibition, showing work by members and entitled ‘Arts & Crafts’ was held at the City Art Gallery, Manchester in September-October 1898. ('The Studio', September 1898, p. 284). The poster for the exhibition, designed by Elizabeth Ellen Houghton (1853-1922), was illustrated in ‘The Studio’ in November 1898, p.126. A second exhibition of work by Guild members was mounted at the City Art Gallery, Manchester in 1903.
