Policy: The first small art school operated in Castle Street, Wolverhampton from 1851 until funding was found for a new school in Darlington Street, which opened in 1854. See Jones, 'Historical Sketch', (1897), p. 147.
The 'College of Art Prospectus', 1950-1951, 'Foreword' describes the history of the School of Art as follows: 'The original Wolverhampton School of Art was opened in 1851 at Castle Street as an indirect result of the Great Exhibition of that year. The standard of foreign exhibits at the Exhibition had revealed that the design of many of our own manufactured articles was very poor and men of foresight in the more progressive industrial areas of the country set about correcting this situation by the establishment of Schools of Art and Design'.
