History or description: James William Swinton (born c.1900 in Hucknall Torkard) was the third or fourth generation of stonemasons to run a business from West Street in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. His grandfather, William Swinton (born c.1838 in Linby) was a stonemason and collector of poor rates in 1881. His son, James's father, was Herbert Swinton (born c.1873 in Hucknall Torkard) who continued the stonemasonry business in West Street from 1891.
