History or description: The guild grew out of classes for working men and boys, and was supported by the city's wealthy non-conformist elite. Arthur Dixon managed the metal workshops. The name was inspired by C.R. Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft. Dixon and Ashbee were friends and the latter gave the inaugural address in September 1890.
