History or description: A business established by Philip Henry Nourse (1857-1941) who was born in Hereford and lived in Much Dewchurch for some or all of his childhood. Nourse worked as a builder and contractor around 1871 and then by 1884 had moved to Aston, Birmingham where he was a sculptor's manager (c.1891). By 1901 he was a partner in (and probably proprietor of) a sculpture and monumental masonry business, which he acquired from Eliza (Elizabeth) Roddis widow of John Roddis around this date. The firm retained the founder's name and traded as Roddis and Nourse until at least 1951. In 1901 Nourse's son Philip H (born c.1880 in Leominster, Herefordshire) was working as a stone and wood carver and another son, Arthur (born c. 1884 in Aston, Birmingham) was a stonemason. The firm continued to trade until after 1951 and was presumably run by one of his sons, probably from sometime in the 1930s.
