Birmingham Art Circle
Foundation date: 1879
Active: 1879 -
Function: Art society
Policy: The Society used the 'moto' 'Ars et Fraternitas' from its foundation. The object of the Art Circle was described as being 'to promote unity among the workers in the Arts and to hold Exhibitions when convenient'['Rules', 1899].
An account of the foundation of the society is given by Walter Langley (Honorary Secretary 1881) in the first exhibition catalogue (Nov-Dec 1881) who states it was formed by Ernest Thompson with six other artists in 1879. Langley describes the exhibitions as consisting 'only of works by the members - young Birmingham artists - they will possess a character and an interest peculiarly their own.'
The Foreword to the 1919 exhibition catalogue describes the Society as a 'body of artists and craftsmen banded together as an exhibiting Society. The social side has not been allowed to lapse; periodic meetings are held for mutual intercourse and discussion of art subjects.'
The Club held two exhibitions of works by members annually in the summer and winter from its foundation c.1896. Between 1896-1906 there were annual exhibitions held at The Graves' Gallery.
From 1907 the annual exhibition was held at the RBSA Gallery usually in June to July switching to the winter (December-January) in 1915.
Works of sculpture were first included in the Art Circle shows in November 1896 (nb. there are no catalogues from 1893-1895, and no sculpture was exhibited before 1893). From 1896 onwards sculptor members were listed in the catalogues and sculpture, craft work and jewellery objects were normally included in the exhibitions.
Sculpture was displayed in: 1896, 1899, 1900, 1905, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1928, 1929, 1931, 1932, 1934-37, 1939, 1944, 1947, 1949 [nb. some catalogues are missing].
Craft work and jewellery objects were normally also displayed in these years and additionally in 1906, 1907, 1909, 1913, 1914, 1922, 1926-7, 1930, 1933, 1938, 1943, 1945-6, 1950 [nb. some catalogues are missing].
The Art Circle shared its exhibitions with the Easel Club from 1914 onwards.
The Club also organized excursions to exhibitions and theatre trips. For example in 1928 they went to the Repertory Theatre, Birmingham and works were displayed in the foyer of the theatre in November 1929.
On the 5 December 1931, it was agreed that 'annually a craft member be appointed to co-operate with hangers in the display of the craftwork.'
Rules: Prospective members had to be proposed and seconded by two existing members. They were elected by a ballot with a minimum majority vote of two-thirds of existing members ['Rules' 1899]. Candidates were required to submit works for examination by existing members for election at annual meetings. Between two and four general meetings were held each year.
In 1882 the Society discussed whether it would be 'practicable to admit men as members, who had not identified themselves with the town of Birmingham for many years (though originally of Birmingham).' It was decided as a matter of principle that it was best to keep the Circle 'local' as far as practicable. ['Meeting minutes' 1882] However this policy was omitted from the 'Revised Rules' in 1920.
From January 1890 it was agreed that all members of the Society should contribute at least one 'Picture' to each exhibition held; failure to contribute would lead to loss of membership to the society.
In December 1921 it was agreed that if a member was elected on the basis of their 'craft work', they 'may send work other than of the kind which he was specifically elected but that the hangers shall have powers to reject it of not suitable for exhibition.' ['Meeting minutes', December 1921]
