Royal Birmingham Society of Artists
Other names: Birmingham Society of Artists
Foundation date: 1868
Active: 1868 -
Function: Art society
Rules: The 1932 ‘Exhibition of Modern Works of Art’ exhibition catalogue describes the rules of membership to the Society as follows: ‘The Society of Artists shall consist of two distinct Bodies – Professional and Unprofessional – with equal authority.' It goes on to describe the ‘Professional Body’ of members as consisting of ‘at least twelve Artists resident in Birmingham or its immediate neighbourhood.'
These members were able to appoint new members by ‘a plan previously agreed upon, by a Select Committee’, but if there are too few artists on the Committee the ‘Unprofessional Body’ are able to vote to elect new members at the Annual General Meeting.
The ‘Unprofessional Body’ consisted of annual subscribers and donors. The unprofessional body also had a committee.
Seven unprofessional members and seven professional members attended the Annual General Meeting. The President, secretary and treasurer were elected by these fourteen members at the meeting.
From the 1881 the professional members were split into ‘Members’ and ‘Associates’. The book 'The History of the Royal Society of Artists'(p. 50) describes how it was decided to ‘follow the model of the Royal Academy by creating a body of associates from which responsible members should in future be chosen.'
The rules regarding the election of Associate members of the Society were described in the Autumn 1938 exhibition catalogue: 'During each Annual Spring and Autumn Exhibition of the Society a special meeting of Members is called, when works exhibited are carefully considered and the name of any artist or artist craftsman whose work is judged to be of sufficient merit is noted. The artist is then proposed and seconded by Members of the Society, and his name put up at the Annual Meeting, which is held in March of each year, and the result voted upon by the Members.'
From Spring 1927 onwards Members and Associates were listed in the Society's exhibition catalogues as R.B.S.A. and A.R.B.S.A. respectively.
From 1870 a ‘Professor of Sculpture’ was elected and is listed in the Society's exhibition catalogues. There was no Professor of sculpture from Autumn 1886 to Autumn 1889 and in Autumn 1933. There are no listings in the catalogues from Spring 1943 to Spring 1946.
History or description: The society began as the Birmingham Society of Artists in 1821. While a larger building was being erected in New Street to house the Society in 1829, the 'artists professionally engaged seceded and formed an exhibiting society which is now the Royal Society of Artists, the royal permission having been obtained in 1868. The more wealthy portion of the Society continued its course on educational and social lines, resulting in the formation of the Society of Arts and School of Design...'
'... In 1958 the artists returned to their old home in New Street, a reconciliation having been effected. The Royal Society prospered, added to their galleries, and in 1877 were able to pay out the Society of Arts, thus giving them sole control of the buildings with the exception of a reservation which gives to the School of Art the use of the galleries during the month of February. The Royal Society of Artists has held and Autumn Exhibition for 85 years in unbroken sequence, and a Spring Exhibition for 46 years.'
'Until the foundation of the Midland Institute in 1852, the rooms of the Society formed the only meeting place for those concerned in the literary, musical and artistic welfare of the City.' [Extracts from 'A Brief History', Autumn Exhibition, 1912]
From its foundation the society held annual Autumn exhibitions, and from 1966 onwards a Spring exhibition was added. From 1946 to 1950 there were two spring exhibitions (one of oil painting and sculpture and another of watercolours and handicraft), and one autumn exhibition.

Institutional and Business Connections
Associated with Midland Arts Club
1892 - 1951
Arts Club used rooms at the RBSA from 1892.'Social gatherings', 'ladies meetings' and 'annual meetings' were held in 1892, 1894 to 1913, 1917 to 1951. All of the members meetings took place in the Gallery from 1917 onwards (except in the autumn of 1939), this was found to be cheaper than renting rooms at the Grand Hotel for meetings. Members were able to participate in RBSA exhibitions from c. 1917. In 1928 an exhibition of members' works was hung on the walls of the RBSA Gallery for a day; from this date onwards the Club frequently included an exhibition of works at meetings that were held at the RBSA; however, there is no record of the display of works of sculpture at the gallery [summary].
Collaborated with Birmingham Municipal School of Art, Central School
1887 - 1913
Annual exhibitions of student' works were held in February at the rooms of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, New Street from 1887.
Collaborated with Birmingham Art Circle
May 1894 - 1950
The Art Circle first approached the RBSA to hold exhibitions in its rooms in April 1894. The RBSA granted the Art Circle permission to use its North Room for their Summer Exhibition from May to June 1894.
Members of the Art Circle took part in the RBSA exhibition in the Spring of 1901.
Seperate annual exhibitions of Art Circle members' works were held at the RBSA Gallery in the Summers (normally between the RBSA Spring and Autumn shows)from 1907 to c. 1915. From 1915-1920 exhibitions were held in the Winter months.
All meetings were held in the RBSA(normally in the Council Room) from December 1914 onwards.
From 1920 onwards annual exhibitions of approximately three weeks, were held in January (ocassionally beginning in December).
The Art Circle Meeting Minutes from March 1931 describe the relationship between the two organizations, stating that 'so far as the Art Circle is concerned the R.B.S.A. cannot at present make any change in the conditions under which the gallery has been let to them in the past for the small sum of £22.10.0., those conditions being - A. That space should be found for a collective exhibition of the work of the Easel Club. B. That subscribers of the R.B.S.A. be admitted free to the exhibitions. C. That the R.B.S.A. supply attendants as before' [summary].
