Royal Academy of Arts
Foundation date: 10 December 1768
Function: Art society
Policy: 'The great object of the Royal Academy is the promotion of Art, by instruction and by emulation. The means of study and the occasional teaching which directs it, are provided; and competition, even when not public, is always unconsciously operating' ('Annual Report, 1859' (1860) p. 16).
The Academy made the following assessment of its impact on other art institutions in 1868: '…the growth of …many Institutions and Societies for the promotion of Art, not only in the metropolis, but in the various provinces of England.' was noted. For example 'Scotland has its Royal Scottish Academy, and Ireland its Royal Hibernian Academy, with their Institutions of Art in the provinces of each kingdom. These Academies and Institutions have been more or less founded on the model of the Royal Academy of London, and again so far testify to the influence of the parent Institution.' ('Annual Report, 1868' (1869), p. 8)
The current aims of the Academy are: '...to aspire, in the words of its eighteenth-century founders, ‘to promote the arts of design’, that is: to present a broad range of visual art to the widest possible audience; to stimulate debate, understanding and creation through education; and to provide a focus for the interests of artists and art-lovers. The Academy has held an annual Summer Exhibition of works for sale since its formation and its first loan exhibition was held in 1870. The Academy now enjoys an unrivalled reputation as a venue for exhibitions of international importance.' (http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/about/ accessed 3 September 2010)
Rules: The 'Abstract of the Constitution and Laws' (1860), outlined the rules of the Academy in detail. A summary of these rules, particularly those relevant to sculptors, is as follows:
- The society should include forty elected Academicians, and twenty Associates.
- The President of the society to be elected annually.
- The Academy's Council to consist of eight Academicians and the President.
- Seats on the Council 'shall go by succession to all the Academicians, expect the Secretary, who shall always belong thereto. The four Senior Members of the Council shall go out by rotation every year, and these shall not re-occupy their seats in the Council till all the rest of the Academicians have served' (p. 4).
- The Council would meet as often as the society required.
- 'A Committee, consisting of two of the Senior Members of the Council, shall annually, with the assistance of the Keeper, examine the Models, Cast, &c., belonging to the Royal Academy, and report such improvements as may be necessary, within one month from the close of the Exhibition' (p. 10).
- An annual General Assembly meeting would be held.
- Professorships of the Royal Academy would be held for five years, after which Professor would be eligible for re-election.
- The Professor of Sculpture would 'read annually six lectures, explanatory of the principles of Style and Form in that Art, and its peculiarities of Composition' (p. 19).
- Lectures to be given on Sculpture. The report specified that 'no comments or criticisms on the opinions or productions of living Artists in this Country, shall be introduced into any of the Lectures delivered in the Royal Academy' (p. 21).
- Nine Visitors to the Life Academy to be elected annually. 'Their business shall be to attend, one month each, by rotation, to set the Figures, to examine and correct the Performances of the Students, and give them their Advice and Instruction' (p. 22).
Royal Academy Exhibitions:
- An annual exhibition of paintings, sculpture, engravings, and designs is to be held.
- No copies (except paintings in enamel and engravings), or works that had been exhibited elsewhere to be included.
- No models in coloured wax to be shown.
(pp. 45-46)
In 1867 the Academy introduced a new category of membership, namely 'Foreign Honorary Artist'. This could be awarded to artists who were not resident in the United Kingdom. Artists had to be nominated by Academy members. See Royal Academy's 1867 'Annual Report', (1868), p. 10.
In January 1892, a new resolution was implemented that 'provides for the election of a Sculptor or Architect member of the Council for the year when required as an assessor, in addition to the regular Council of ten'. See 'Annual Report, 1892', (1893), p. 10.
In 1936, the Council resolved that 'women members be eligible for service on Committees of the Royal Academy, and that Women Academicians serve by rotation on the Council as other Academicians'. See 'Annual Report, 1936', (1937), p. 39.
In 1942, it was recommended that the minimum number of Associates be raised from thirty to forty. This should include six sculptor Royal Academicians and six sculptor Associate members. See 'Annual Report, 1942', (1943), p. 22.
Meeting schedule: annual
History or description: The foundation of the Royal Academy followed several attempts to form a society for the advancement of the fine arts, 'Sir William Chambers, (then Mr. Chambers) Mr. West, and other distinguished artists of that time, being aware of these difficulties, and the impediments to the permanent establishment of such a society, determined to apply to the King on the subject'. The King signed an 'Instrument' for the establishment of the Academy on the 7 December, 1768. The King became patron of the society, controlled its accounts, and new apartments were constructed on the site of Somerset House to house the Royal Academy. In 1837 the Academy moved to 'rooms in a building then in the course of being erected on the north side of Trafalgar Square'. A grant of £500 was given by the Royal Academy (with permission of the King) to aid the Great Exhibition (1851). (Taken from a description of 'The Relation of the Royal Academy to the Crown', and 'The Relation of the Royal Academy to the Public' in the 'Annual Report, 1859' (1860)
A full history of the Royal Academy can be found in 'The History of the Royal Academy 1768-1968' by Sidney C. Hutchison (London, 1968). The following are notes of some institutional developments relating to sculpture between 1857-1911:
In 1857 the Government had plans for the 'improvement of the Sculpture Rooms' in the Royal Academy Gallery. Revised plans were put forward in August 1859, and implemented in August 1860. (‘Annual Report,1860’ (1861))
In 1867 Richard Westmacott (Professor of Sculpture), was selected to report on sculpture that was exhibited at the Great International Exhibition, Paris, along with a committee of experts from other disciplines ('Annual Report', (1868), p. 7).
A request from the Burlington Fine Arts Club was received in 1869 to use 'two or three of the new galleries, for the purpose of resuming the Exhibitions which had been discontinued at the British Institution' was rejected by the Academy, because 'it was felt that it was the peculiar duty of the Royal Academy, as chief Art-teaching Institution in the kingdom, to supply the desideratum contemplated in the proposition of the Burlington Fine Arts Club'. ('Annual Report, 1869', (1870), p. 8)
The same report recorded a request from female students of the Academy's Life School for 'free admission to the Exhibition', this was granted. ('Annual Report, 1869', (1870), p. 12)
The Annual Report for 1884 records a significant increase in the number of works sent in to the exhibition since 1871 when 3339 were submitted compared to 9063 works received in 1885. ('Annual Report, 1884', (1885), p. 12)
A 'British School at Rome' was established in 1911, and two painters, one sculptor and one architect were appointed to serve on the committee. See ('Annual Report, 1911', (1912), p. 10)

Proposal received from Royal Society of British Sculptors
1937
The R.B.S. sent a proposal to the Royal Academy on the 15 February, 1937, suggesting that an 'International Exhibition of 20th Century Sculpture' should be held at Burlington House, within the next two or three years. The Society suggested that an exhibition of this type would contribute to the appreciation and educational value of Sculpture in Britain. They proposed an exhibition of c. 300 to 350 work of average size, in a finished material (where possible), and suggested that works should be selected by the representatives of each country. See Royal Society of British Sculptors, 'Annual Report, 1936', (1937), p. 8. The letter was written by William Reid Dick. In 1938 it is recorded that the arrangements for this exhibition had been postponed 'owing to the uncertainty of the International situation during the year'. See 'Annual Report, 1938', (1939), p. 8.
Received complaint from Royal Society of British Sculptors
18 May 1911 - 19 February 1912 (Presumed)
Gotto raised concerns over the poor lighting of sculpture at the Royal Academy [18 May 1911, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no.1]. Decided to draft a petition, with Gotto and Stirling Lee responsible [20 November 1911, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no.1]. This was rejected in favour of writing a letter for Frampton to give to Thornycroft, expressing the views of the Society [19 February 1912, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no.1]. Response from Thornycroft - regretting that no action could be taken due to cost - is attached to minutes [21 October 1912, Royal Society of British Sculptors: Minutes of Council Meetings, no.1].
Received complaint from Royal Society of British Sculptors
1928
It was reported in the Royal Society of British Sculptor's 'Annual Report', (1928), that 'the matter of the unsatisfactory existing conditions regarding the showing of sculpture at the the Royal Academy was taken up and after careful discussion, a letter was sent to the President and Council. To this a sympathetic reply was received and it is hoped, as a consequence, that ultimately a more worthy provision for the display of sculpture may result. But sculptors will no doubt have to continue to agitate collectively before anything adequate is done'.
