Gaffin and Co.
Active: 1890 - 1921
Function: Sculpture cleaner, sculptor, monumental sculptor
History or description: This firm continued the name of the business which had been established by Edward and Thomas Gaffin in the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth century. No members of the Gaffin family have so far been linked to the firm after Edward Gaffin junior's (c.1843-71) death. The exact date of the change from Thomas or Edward Gaffin to Gaffin and Co is uncertain but there are works attributed to the business continuously up to the early 1900s listed in Roscoe (2009).
The firm seems to have been involved in making war memorials in the early 1920s. For example there is a reference to Gaffin and Co, London, being paid £105. 1s. 0d. in connection with the Soldiers' Memorial in the parish of Addingham, Cumbria. A record in Swansea Archives indicates Gaffin and Co. were involved in creating the War Memorial at Briton Ferry, Neath in 1921.
This record includes information submitted by Lydia Gray from the Vestry Book,1921, PR29/76, Cumbria Archive Service, Carlisle and by D.A. Lewis at Swansea Archives.
