History or description: William Vickers (c. 1851-1922) was born in England. By 1898 he was in Glasgow and teaching design, decorative art and carving at Glasgow School of Art. Vickers held this teaching post till 1920. At the same time he established a successful monumental and architectural carving business. Vickers' commissions included the high altar for St Alysius Church (1908-10). He died suddenly in 1922 and the business was run for a year by his apprentice, Loris Rey.
