History or description: Henry Dunkley was born c.1817 in Birmingham. He was the son of Thomas Dunkley, painter. Henry had moved to London before 1838 and at that date was working as an engraver. However, by 1851 he had established a stone carving business. Twenty years later Henry was describing himself as a sculptor. His grandson, Edward Lowther Dunkley, son of Henry Dunkley Junior (1864-1942), exhibited at the Royal Academy and worked as an architectural sculptor.
