Samuel Cundy
Active: 1838 - 1867
Function: Stone mason, marble mason, statuary
History or description: Samuel Tansley Cundy (1816-67) was born in London. He was the son of James Cundy (born c.1793 active until 1841), sculptor and 'statuary' (according to the baptism record of Samuel). James also worked as a builder and was a nephew of Thomas Cundy (c.1790 and active until c.1861), architect. Samuel's grandfather was Thomas Cundy, architect, builder and surveyor of the Grosvenor Estates in Belgravia.
Samuel executed a number of works in London and St Albans, the latter under the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. He was a master mason and employer in the early 1850s however his business evidently suffered a reversal of fortunes because he was listed as a bankrupt in the 'London Gazette' of May 1857. However, Cundy continued to work and was employed as superintendent of the Abbey Works in St. Albans, Hertfordshire c.1861.
