History or description: Founded as a monumental masonry business by Edwin Burnell (1836-1917). The original yard was in East Street, Bedminster which continues to be a place of business to the present (2012). Burnell's partner was Albert Edward Tovey (1868-1927) of Bristol who married Edwin's daughter, Sarah Jane Burnell on 19 March 1889. Together they embarked on running a funeral service which has continued ever since trading as Burnell Tovey. The firm was continued by Reginald Burnell Tovey after Albert's death in 1927. Probate records show that Albert's effects were valued at £2,675 11s. 1d. (granted 3 February 1928).
