Henry Thomas Margetson
Active: 1861 - 1901
Function: Marble mason, sculptor
History or description: Henry Thomas Margetson was born in St Paul, Bristol almost certainly in 1833 (he was christened on 25 August that year). His father was James Margetson. Henry worked as a stone carver and sculptor (probably an architectural sculptor) in Bristol c.1860-70 and then London c.1873-90. According to Mitchell, Margetson was Thomas Earp's foreman at the Royal Courts of Justice, London, carrying out all the exterior and much of the interior sculpture and carving for the architect George Edmund Street. This means Margetson moved to London sometime around 1873 when construction began (though his move could have been earlier if Earp was already employing him on other projects). Margetson retired to Bristol and died there on 27 August 1909. He left effects valued at £2604 5s. 4d (probate granted on 31 January 1910).
