'The One Shilling Art Union has now become, throughout England, a popular Institution; its object being to disseminate a taste for the Fine Arts, by placing the chance of obtaining Paintings or Drawings within the means of all classes, and to assist Artists in the disposal of their Works.

Rules: 1862:
'Subscribers will be entitled to one chance in the Drawing of the Art Union for every Shilling subscribed.
The whole of the amount arising from the Sale of Shares, after deducting necessary expenses, to be distributed in Prizes.
Each Prizeholder is at liberty to select out of the Bristol Academy's Annual Exhibition one Work only of the amount of his Prize, but may take a picture of greater value by paying the difference between the value of the Prize and that of the Picture selected.
Subscribers not present at the time of the Drawing for the Prizes, may depute any other Person to attend at the Drawing.
Prizeholders at a distance, who may not depute any one to select for them, will have their Pictures chosen by a selecting Committee.
To avoid dissatisfaction, the Committee have determined that each individual number shall be drawn, so that any one who attends the Drawing may know the fate of the share or shares in which he may be interested.
