Notes: The Builder, 6 August 1859 (p. 527) reported that Dr. Rogers of Stirling had visited Ettrick and Yarrow with the sculptor Andrew Currie to look out a site for the proposed monument. It was inaugurated before 14 July 1860, according to the The Builder (p. 451) of that date, which also gives a detailed description. The stone for the monument was provided by the Duke of Buccleugh from his quarry at Whitahill, near Langholm
