City of Manchester Art Gallery, Exhibition of the Work of Living British Artists, 1927
Start Date: 17 May 1927
End Date: 16 July 1927
Type: Exhibition
Policy: 'The British Artists' Exhibitions, for the organisation of which Sir Joseph Duveen has made himself responsible, aim at presenting the artists who are waiting to win their public, and who have satisfied the standard of achievement imposed by a committee of brother artists commanding general respect, to appreciative picture-buyers throughout the Empire. The increasing study of masterpieces in the galleries of every great centre is encouraging the taste for picture buying. But this taste is still far too limited, and it is often confined to the work of painters whose reputations are already established. Such painters naturally and properly command prices which are beyond the reach of many who would like buy but can only afford comparatively small sums. To bring an unlimited public of modest means into contact with the artist who has not yet found touch with this public, is the main object of these Exhibitions' (Robert Witt, Catalogue, 1927, p. 3).
