Policy: 'From the Council of the Royal Institution, as representing the proprietors of [Manchester Art Gallery], is annually elected a 'Selection and Hanging Committee' upon which devolves the duty of organising and arranging the Autumn Exhibitions. Their invitations are issued over a very wide area, and the aim is not to make it an exhibition of local artists' works only, but to obtain a fair representation of English Art all over the country, and also to secure works from the French, German, Italian and other foreign schools...'
